Royal Museum Shop Feature Wall + Integrated Cabinet

Royal Museum Shop Feature Wall + Integrated Cabinet

Royal Museum Shop Feature Wall + Integrated Cabinet

The Royal BC Museum engaged MJY Fabrication to fabricate a redesigned entrance to the Royal Museum Shop, transforming a standard storefront into a defined architectural feature within Clifford Carl Hall.

The goal was to create a permanent, integrated solution that combined display, wayfinding, and identity into one cohesive installation.

The Challenge

Built for Culture. Designed to Endure.

The existing entrance lacked presence and offered limited opportunity for impactful merchandising. The museum required a feature that elevated the shop while respecting the architectural integrity of the hall.

The most significant technical challenge was the design and execution of the full front door of the integrated cabinet. Standard cabinet solutions would not provide the durability, structural stability, or visual clarity required for a high traffic museum environment.

MJY supported the museum through the design process, developing a custom solution that addressed structure, hardware, sightlines, and long term performance.

The Approach

Architecture First. Fabrication Without Compromise.

We approached the project with an architectural mindset focused on longevity, material integrity, and seamless integration.

Design Development
We collaborated closely with the museum team to refine proportions, sightlines, and cabinet functionality. The full front door mechanism was carefully engineered to maintain a clean façade while delivering structural reliability.

Material Strategy

  • Vertical alder slats introduce warmth and rhythm to the entry.
  • A colour core laminate cabinet provides durability and a refined, monolithic appearance.
  • Custom glass shelving supports product visibility.
  • A black powder coated illuminated sign anchors the composition above the doorway.

The Build

Rather than treating the showcase as a separate fixture, we built it directly into the architectural wall system. The cabinet, wall, and signage operate as a single unified element.

Before + After

Before: A modest entrance with separate display and signage elements.
After: A unified architectural installation that defines the shop entrance and elevates the visitor experience.
